Attend a wedding and you may see bridesmaids, flower girls, or even the bride carrying a kissing Ball. You may even see kissing balls hanging from trees, staffs or even placed on top of or in vases down the aisle at the ceremony or around the reception.
The kissing ball also known as a Pomander ball originated in the Victorian era. The bouquet flower balls became a popular Christmas custom and mistletoe was first used in creating them.
Some balls were very elaborate. They would also use evergreen plants in them such as bay and pine, flowers and herbs like rosemary, lavender and thyme.
Ribbon and glitter held the plants and flowers together in a ball. Traditionally the ball had an apple or potato base.
They are round in shape with a ribbon loop as a handle to make it easier to carry them.
Kissing balls are traditionally made to decorate the church. They can adorn pews, archways, and they are great for little flower girls. They are easier for them to carry.
More recently the Kissing balls and Pomanders have made a big come back. They are being used as a beautiful alternative to arrangements, to add that mass single colour around the church or venue, creating a very effective visual impact.
Kissing balls may be created in fresh or with artificial flowers.
